MEET ALEXIS

EXPERIENCED LEADER

Alexis served for over a decade as a Jefferson and Gilpin County Deputy District Attorney. She’s handled thousands of cases, including complex felony cases from homicide to sex assault to drug distribution, advocating for crime victims right here in this community. Alexis has made the tough decisions that prosecutors make many times over, prioritizing the prosecution of violent crime while embracing policies that safely divert people who can best be stabilized in the community.

During her decade of service as a Deputy District Attorney, Alexis spent four years leading the day-to-day operations of our District Attorney’s Juvenile Unit, prosecuting individual cases, responding to emergent situations, and leading the specialized court that addresses youth with mental health issues. While mentoring less experienced attorneys, managing support staff, and evaluating employee performance, Alexis developed alternatives to prosecution that provided a successful and supportive path to rehabilitation for youth and their families and advocated for legislation that enabled innovative solutions for youth across the state.

Following these successes, Alexis was designated the District Attorney’s lead human trafficking prosecutor and appointed by Governor Hickenlooper to Colorado’s Human Trafficking Council in 2016. In both roles, she shaped local and state policy and legislation.

In 2017, Alexis was recruited by the Denver County Court to serve as a Magistrate Judge. In that role, Alexis helped lead a successful effort to minimize the incarceration of people awaiting trial who posed little risk to community safety but remained incarcerated due to issues of poverty, mental illness, and addiction, and who were better served in the community with supervision and support.

Before launching her campaign, she began working at Rocky Mountain Victim Law Center, the preeminent legal advocacy organization advocating for the rights of crime victims. Again, Alexis was at the forefront of a new program, offering free legal representation to students facing discrimination on the basis of sex.

In the community, Alexis has trained parents, kids, police, and lawyers on constitutional law and trial advocacy. She also recently finished her term on the Executive Council for the Colorado Bar Association where she oversaw a $10m budget, implemented a five-year strategic plan, reviewed program efficacy including new efforts around Diversity, Equity, and Inclusivity, and reviewed bylaws and memoranda of understanding with other organizations.

Alexis has spent her career giving voice to the voiceless leading the criminal justice system from many angles - including as a policy maker, innovative reformer, and advocate for victims of crime. Utilizing that broad lens, Alexis has brought transformative leadership and effective problem solving to each endeavor, and she will do that again as your next District Attorney.

ADVOCATE FOR REFORM

Whether it is developing new programs for kids, going to bat for legislative change, pushing for transparency, or standing up for people in our community, Alexis works partnership with stakeholders, to provide successful solutions to community issues. Particularly with our community’s youth, she has established diversion programs that promote forward-thinking, community-oriented treatment options in partnership with Jeffco Public Schools, Human Services, and law enforcement - programs that not only keep kids out of the system, but that also keep our community safe.

Listen to Colorado Public Radio’s feature on Alexis’s innovative leadership from 2016 after launching a new sexting education option for kids rather than criminalization.
With support from parents and stakeholders from the Sexting program, Alexis advanced legislation with stakeholders that provided more appropriate charges for children across Colorado.

When it became apparent that Colorado law did not adequately punish those convicted of child sex trafficking, Alexis testified to increase penalties similar to other crimes where children are sexually abused.

While on Governor Hickenlooper’s Human Trafficking Council, Alexis pushed all Colorado prosecutors to be transparent about their human trafficking work, which resulted in this report and evaluation to better prosecute human trafficking in Colorado.

When a loophole was found in the Unlawful Sexual Contact statute, Alexis testified to close the gap and hold predators accountable as a member of the Colorado Women’s Bar Association.

Alexis called out our District Attorney's Office for failing to acknowledge a hate crime in the community. Because of the loud outcry from the National Sikh Coalition and over 2,000 community members, the DA's Office reversed itself and ultimately filed additional appropriate charges.

Alexis's collaborative leadership style will enable her to improve our collective approach to a wide range of issues from day one, leading to safer and healthier communities for all in Colorado.

COLORADO MOM WHO FIGHTS FOR WOMEN

Alexis was born and raised in Colorado. Her parents instilled a belief in community service, promoting public lands, and actively supporting public media, values which led Alexis to devote her career to serving others. She began her professional life working on behalf of survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault at T.E.S.S.A., a community-based non-profit. Alexis came full circle in her advocacy for victims and survivors of crime by joining the Rocky Mountain Victim Law Center, where she advocated for victims of gender-based violence.

She calls Jefferson county home, along with her husband, David, her children, and a Foothills Animal Shelter rescue dog named Kayla. Alexis enjoys yoga, chasing her kids on bike rides, and savoring freshly prepared Thai food made by her husband.
